Opera in three acts. The opera will be performed by soloists of the opera troupe and the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra, the choir of the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. The conductor is Valery Gergiev. The Monarchical Italy of 1800. Political prisoner Cesare Angelotti, who fled the fortress, found refuge in the church. Here, in the family chapel of his sister, the Marquise Attavanti, are hidden the clothes he must change into and flee Rome from the pursuit of the police chief, Baron Scarpia. The artist Mario Cavaradossi works in the church. Fascinated by the appearance of a praying Angelotta (Cesare’s sister), he unconsciously writes from her a penitent sinner Magdalene. Suddenly, the artist sees a man coming out of the chapel and recognizes in him his former friend Angelotti. The fugitive appeals to Mario for help. The approach of Tosca forces him to hide. Cavaradossi’s dispersion engenders suspicion in Tosca, and the similarity of the portrait of Madonna with the appearance of the Marquise causes jealousy in her. Only the ardent assurances of the artist’s love for the time soothe Tosca. After her departure, Cavaradossi offers Angelotti to hide in the villa. A prison cannon is fired announcing the prisoner’s escape. The artist hastens Cesare to leave the church through a secret passage and run to the villa. The church is filled with choristers and people: the news of the victory over Napoleon's troops has come. The solemn service begins. In the crowd suddenly appear the chief of police Scarpia and his henchmen looking for the escaped prisoner. The Baron suspects that Angelotti was here, and Cavaradossi tries to hide him from the police. Scarpia intends to use the situation to his advantage: catch a fugitive, send Cavaradossi to prison and win the favor of his long-standing passion – singer Floria Tosca. Angelotta’s fan, as well as her resemblance to the image of Madonna, help Scarpia to kindle the fire of jealousy in Floria’s soul, and she goes indignantly to Villa Cavaradossi. Following Tosca, Scarpia sends two detectives: she will lead them to the fugitive. In his office in the Palazzo Farnese Scarpia awaits reports. Enthralled by love lust, he conveys to Tosca through a subordinate an invitation to come to him. Spoletta's agent sent in to watch the singer. He reports that the search of the villa gave no results. Scarpia orders the arrested artist to tell him where the fugitive is hiding. Cavaradossi courageously rejects attempts to force him to confess and manages to remind Tosca of the need to remain silent. Scarpia tries in vain to find out her secret. Only the cries of the tortured artist deprive Floria of self-control, and she tells where Angelotti is hiding. The cops bring in an exhausted Cavaradossi. From the order of Scarpia, sending detectives to the well, the artist understands that the policeman managed to find out the location of a friend from Tosca. In anger, he curses his beloved. At this point, Spoletta brings the news that the victory was imaginary and Napoleon's army is approaching Rome. A rebellious artist tries to attack the police chief, but he is captured and taken away. Scarpia offers Tosca a disgraceful deal. He will preserve Cavaradossi's life and freedom if Floria favors him. It rejects with outrage these vile claims. Scarpia continues his persuasion. In exchange for consent, he promises that the shooting will be carried out by blank bullets. Saving Cavaradossi is the only thing Floria cares about right now, and she agrees. At the insistence of Toschi, Scarpia writes a cover letter to the fortress and gives a guarantee that she, together with Mario Cavaradossi, will be able to leave Rome without hindrance. He tries to hold Tosca in his arms, but suddenly receives a dagger from her and dies. Action III Dawn Twilight. Cavaradossi is brought to the site of the fortress tower (the place of execution of prisoners), who was left an hour before the execution. Mario is writing a farewell letter to his beloved. Tosca runs in. She tells the artist that the shooting will not be real. Hearing shots, he must fall, pretending to be killed; after the soldiers leave, they will flee. Convinced of a successful outcome, Cavaradossi calmly stands before the aimed barrels of guns. A volley rattles and it falls. Soldiers are leaving. Floria rushes to her beloved, but he does not respond to her call. Mario's dead. Scarpia's order to shoot blanks was a hoax and his final revenge. Anguish surrounds the pursuers who learned of the murder of Scarpia. In order not to fall into the hands of the executioners, she, determined, runs to the edge of the tower - only death can connect her with Cavaradossi!
