Lecture by Pavel Krestov “What the Ussuri taiga makes noise about”
On March 21, the International Day of Forests is celebrated around the world: exhibitions, planting events and lectures on their importance. The Pushkin Theatre will not be an exception. On the eve of the holiday, Pavel Krestov, Director of the Botanical Garden-Institute of the FEB RAS, will present a lecture "What the Ussuri taiga is making noise about."
"Many secrets are kept in the taiga and jealously protects them from a person. She seems sullen and silent... That's the first impression. But anyone who happens to get to know her, he soon gets used to her and longs if he does not see the forest for a long time. Dead taiga seems only from the outside, in fact it is full of life. – Vladimir Arseniev, “Across the Ussuri region.”
The Ussuri taiga is one of the most interesting biomes of Russia, about which the whole world learned thanks to Vladimir Arsenyev. What is its uniqueness, why does the Amur tiger live in the Ussuri taiga, how it is arranged and how it lives, what did it mean for the state, who studied it and what we now know about it, why is it bad now and what is it bad for us? We will try to understand these and many other issues in this lecture. Let’s talk about the evolution of the biome of the Ussuri taiga, about the complex relationship with man in different periods of history and why we should listen to its mysterious noise, explains Pavel Krestov
