Komarov Lotus in Primorsky Krai

Komarov Lotus (Latin Nelumbo Komarovii) is a relic plant common in the south of the Far East and listed in the Red Book of Russia. It is believed that the lotus is the same age as the dinosaurs, it bloomed 100 million years ago.

Lotus is a sacred plant in many countries of Southeast and East Asia. It occupies an honorable place in religious rites, legends and legends. The lotus is considered a symbol of sun, beauty, prosperity, flower of life. In ancient Eastern mythology it is said: "Seeing the flowering of the lotus will be happy for life".

Lotuses Komarov grow on several lakes of Primorsky Krai and bloom only a few days a year. The flowering period is from mid-July to mid-August. The plant is quite large, reaches a height of 2 meters, the diameter of the leaves can be up to 1 meter, and the flowers in the open form - about 30 centimeters. They have an amazing delicate aroma. 

The leaves of lotuses are covered with a special wax coating, which does not allow them to get wet - the water just rolls off them with balls. The flowers always face the sun and turn as it moves. The buds open in the morning and close at night. It is found that during the night inside the flower heat is formed. This is used by various insects, crawling inside before closing the bud.

The lotus combined the incompatible. On the one hand, he survived the ice age: the seeds of the plant do not freeze in severe cold, but fall into suspended animation. Biological processes slow down and the flower survives. On the other hand, it is very delicate and vulnerable - it does not grow in dirty ponds. If you rip it, after an hour the petals will begin to crumble, and if you cut it in a bud, the bud will never open.
