Today we asked a few questions to the project curator and photographer of the Arsenyev Museum Slava Ivanov.

How to take pictures of the fortress?

This question should be asked to the authors. For me personally, a fortress is an abyss in which you can look indefinitely, and sooner or later it will answer your questions. I like to touch walls, I like to peer into the cracks of concrete, see how new life is born in the walls. How to tell the story of such a monument in the frame? My first impression of the fortress is the scale of the underground galleries. Like an anthill: endless moves, and each has its own aesthetic. It was built for protection, and it was a work of art. All this from attention to a person: to his feelings and experiences. For us, the view of the author, his reading of the monument, his association is important. - How important is it to notice details when taking such a photo?

The details are the truth. When you see a particular decorative technique, cornice, curl, relief - you have questions: why? how? why? About such a large, monumental object can not be told in broad strokes, here is important, I would say, surgical work. You shot various historical objects – the Rostov Kremlin, in Vladivostok – a fortress. Are there any differences in the shooting of such different monuments of architecture? Comparing the Rostov Kremlin and the Vladivostok fortress is difficult. These are completely different planes, intersecting only in one – all this is architecture. Nothing more. What I learned here in the Far East is a completely different chapter. It has its own philosophy, its own geometry, its own pulse. This is just another organism.

The material and photos are taken from the telegram channel of the Arsenyev Museum.
