Big GUM is the oldest department store in the Far East and an important attraction of Vladivostok. Its history began in the 1880s, when German entrepreneurs Gustav Kunst and Gustav Albers built the first stone shop with unique architecture. This building became not only the center of trade, but also the place where the first electric lighting, steam heating and elevator appeared in the city.
Today GUM is not just a shopping center, but a real cultural cluster. The courtyard has become a popular holiday destination, where exhibitions, concerts and fashion shows take place. Here you can immerse yourself in the atmosphere of old Vladivostok, admire the architectural details and enjoy cozy cafes and shops.

On September 16, 1864, the brig "Meta" entered the Golden Horn, on board of which was a 26-year-old native of Hamburg Gustav Albers. From this date, the history of not only the largest trading company of the Far East of the late XIX - early XX century began, but also the history of the most important store in Vladivostok.
Albers's companion was his compatriot Gustav Kunst. In 1865, Kunst and Albers built their first store in Vladivostok. I brought in essential goods: tools, sugar, tea, matches, candles, fabrics, weapons, vodka. That was exactly what was needed: the newly founded city in eastern Russia was literally missing everything
The best time to visit the Grand GUM
The Grand GUM is open to visitors all year round, and each season makes its visit in its own way special. In summer, it is especially pleasant to stroll around its courtyard, admiring the historical architecture and atmosphere of the old city. Autumn and winter give the building a special charm: warm light showcases, decorated for the holidays facades and cozy cafes create a unique atmosphere. In the spring, it is especially pleasant to arrange photo shoots, when the soft light emphasizes the beauty of ancient details.

The Big GUM is located in the very center of Vladivostok, on Svetlanskaya Street, 33. You can get here either by car or by public transport. There are bus stops nearby, and GUM is easily reached on foot from the central square or the train station.
There are parking zones for motorists, but finding a free space during rush hour can be difficult. A walk along the historic Svetlanskaya Street to GUM will be a great addition to a visit to this iconic place.
