Askold Strait Guardian

> On the northern cape of the Askold Strait, where steep cliffs meet the waves of the Ussuri Gulf, stands one of the most atmospheric lighthouses of Primorye - the Sysoev lighthouse. Its light helps sailors navigate in difficult waters dotted with pitfalls, and has been a part of the maritime history of the region for almost a hundred years.

Cape Sysoyev was first mapped back in 1862, when the Vostok schooner expedition worked here. It was named in honor of one of the participants of the voyage - the navigator conductor Ivan Sysoev.

>The first navigation sign here appeared in 1932 - a simple wooden pyramid, which a year later was equipped with flashing fire. A few years later, a real lighthouse tower and a small town for caretakers grew on the cape. Interesting fact: for a long time next to the lighthouse stood a bell weighing almost 600 kilograms, which rang during fogs, warning sailors about the danger.

>The modern lighthouse was built in 1972: it is a red octagonal brick tower with a lamp structure at the top. Its white light is visible at a distance of up to 37 kilometers, and so far it helps ships safely pass through the strait.

Today, Sysoyev's lighthouse is administered by the Fleet Hydrographic Service. The object itself is closed to visitors, but you can see it from the water or from the shore - and this spectacle is truly fascinating. The lighthouse tower stands out spectacularly against the background of steep cliffs and seems to be a symbol of the eternal confrontation between man and the elements.

A trip to the Sysoyev lighthouse is an opportunity to touch the history of navigation, feel the spirit of expeditions of the XIX century and enjoy some of the harshest and most beautiful landscapes of Primorye.
