Memorial "The Grieving Mother"

The Grieving Mother Memorial is one of the most significant monuments of Nakhodka, erected in memory of the tragic death of the crew of the fishing trawler "Boxytogorsk", which sank on January 19, 1965 in the Bering Sea. That disaster killed 24 sailors, and for the city, where almost every family is connected to the sea, it was a heavy blow. The monument was created as a place where residents could honor the memory of the fallen fishermen and all those who did not return from sea voyages.
The central figure of the memorial is a woman-mother with a child in her arms, facing Nakhodka Bay. Her image symbolizes the women of Primorye, who escort husbands and sons to the sea and often live in anxiety for their fate. >> Behind the figure rise two pylons, resembling ship sails and enhancing the maritime theme of the composition. At the foot there is a memorial plate with the names of all 24 dead crew members of Boxitogorsk. A long staircase leads to the memorial along the hillside - the ascent creates a sense of solemnity and emphasizes the importance of the place.
Over time, the memorial became an important part of the city’s memory and cultural heritage of Nakhodka. In 2007, a small belfry was built nearby, which complemented the complex and added to its spiritual sound. Today, the Grieving Mother is not only an architectural object, but also an emotional symbol of the city: residents, fishermen, their families and tourists come here to lay flowers, remember the dead and feel the connection with the maritime history of the Primorsky Territory.
