Popov Island was first discovered by French navigators in the middle of the XIX century. In the 1860s, an expedition under the command of Vasily Babkin arrived on the island. They described the coast and gave the island the name Rynda - in honor of the corvette on which they sailed. But the name of the island did not last long. Soon it was renamed in honor of the Russian naval commander and shipbuilder Andrei Alexandrovich Popov.

Popov Island is one of the four inhabited islands. There are two small villages here. It offers several tourist bases of different comfort levels.

Of the attractions, first of all, it is worth highlighting the Museum of the Marine Reserve “Sea Nature”, which boasts a rich exposition demonstrating the diversity of the Sea of Japan. In addition, the museum has an archaeological and ethnographic complex dedicated to the life of the aborigines of the Far East. This open-air exposition is a reconstruction of the dwellings and outbuildings of people who once inhabited the islands in Peter the Great Bay.

Also of interest to inquisitive tourists can be preserved objects of coastal battery No. 901. But the main wealth of Popov Island is nature. There are picturesque rocks and grottoes, sandy beaches and secluded coves. The best place for a beach holiday is the Bay of the Border, which is popularly called the “French beach”. The island is also interesting for diving lovers.
