Lighthouses of Primorye: history and legends
Опубликовано: 21.05.2026
Along the rocky coast of Primorsky Krai today there are more than 30 operating civil and military lighthouses. These navigational structures for a century and a half point the way to ships, protecting them from dangerous reefs, shallows and dense seaside fogs. Lighthouses have long become symbols of the region, for which tourists from all over the country go on multi-kilometer trips.
The legendary lighthouse of Tokarevsky:
History and symbols of Vladivostok
If you are interested in Vladivostok lighthouses, then first of all you will be pointed to Tokarevsky lighthouse. The oldest navigation post of the city was founded in 1860, and the familiar white round stone tower was built in 1910. The lighthouse of Vladivostok on the Tokarev cat is located on the very edge of the continent. Further - only salt water, the Bosphorus Strait of the East and the endless Pacific Ocean. Locals appreciate this place for the amazing atmosphere: in winter, spotted seals (largae) come here, and in summer you can watch the huge cargo ships passing by. But this is not the only such building in the city. At the entrance to the Bosphorus East, on a separate rocky island, there is Skryplyova lighthouse - the same age as the city itself. Another closed facility is located near Patrocl Bay - Basargin Lighthouse.
💡 It is impossible to get to the territory of Basargin and Skryplev lighthouses, since they belong to the Ministry of Defense. But they can be considered during a water trip on a boat or sapa.
Historical lighthouses of Primorsky Krai:
from Cape Bruce to Gamov
Outside Vladivostok, the navigation history becomes even more ambitious. Busse Lighthouse Brusse Cape has more than 100 years of history and still retains its original appearance. It was built from monolithic concrete in the Hasan district to ensure the safe entry of ships into the Amur Bay. The white hexagonal tower contrasts with the black basaltic columns of the cape, which resemble frozen volcanic lava.
The seaside land is rich in other outstanding engineering monuments, each of which deserves special attention. Travelers should visit several more famous buildings:
• Gamova Lighthouse - the southernmost navigation post of Russia. There is an old bell for sound signals in the fog and the original French optics of the nineteenth century.
• Balusek Lighthouse is located on the top of a high cliff in the Olginsky district, from where a panoramic view of Vladimir Bay opens.
• The Povorotny Lighthouse is a key landmark at the eastern entrance to Peter the Great Bay, greeting all ships entering the port of Nakhodka.
In remote locations are the lighthouse on Askold Island and the Rudny Lighthouse in Dalnegorsk, located near the Dva Brata (Two Brothers) kekurs. Trips to these sites require good physical fitness and reliable transportation.
📌 For tourists: When planning independent excursions to the lighthouses, always bring a thick, windproof jacket, a hat, and comfortable shoes with rigid, non-slip soles. The weather on the exposed coastal capes changes rapidly, and the rocky coastal trails require extra caution.
Primorsky Krai Lighthouses on the Map: Route Planning Tips
This detailed interactive map of Primorsky Krai lighthouses will help you accurately calculate travel time and plan the optimal route by car or boat. Most of the historic towers are located at a considerable distance from civilization, on the edges of rocky peninsulas. While Tokarevskaya Spit is easily accessible by bus or on foot, visiting the remote capes will require a well-equipped 4x4 or a boat rental.

There are several proven ways to see these legendary architectural monuments:
- Book a classic group tour of Vladivostok's lighthouses to see the structures from the water.
- Book a private boat tour to visit islands like Askold.
- Take a self-guided weekend road trip to the Bruce or Gamov Peninsulas.
Before leaving, be sure to check the weather forecast and wave heights. Dense coastal fog can completely obscure the tower from view, and strong storm winds can make a walk along the cape unsafe.
Honorary badge "Lighthouse of Primorye" for active travelers
For lovers of active recreation and local history in the region there is a special tourist project. Residents and guests of the region can receive an official memorial sign “Lighthouse of Primorye”. To do this, you need to visit 12 approved navigation facilities in different areas of the region, take verification photos against their background and send an application to the organizers. For more information on the project, see "Lighthouse of Primorye"
