Marine Biosphere Reserve of Primorsky Krai
Marine Far Eastern Reserve is located in Peter the Great Bay, in the Primorsky Krai. Founded in 1978 to preserve valuable species of plants and animals - inhabitants of the shelf of the Sea of Japan (about 250 species of fish, numerous invertebrates, about 800 species of algae). The area of the reserve is 64,316.3 hectares, including 63,000 hectares of marine water and 1,136.3 hectares of territory.
The reserve is located in the western part of the Sea of Japan. It occupies about 10% of the area of Peter the Great Bay - the southernmost and warm-water water area of the Far Eastern seas of Russia. The reserve includes 11 islands, the total area of which is 1,100 hectares.
Where is the Far Eastern Marine Biosphere Reserve
The marine reserve consists of four sites: three are located in the Khasan municipal district of Primorsky Krai, the fourth - on the island of Popov, in the First Maysky district of Vladivostok. For the reserve, areas of the mainland coastline, islands and the adjacent water area with a total area of 64,316.3 hectares are assigned, which is about 10% of the area of Peter the Great Bay. Around the marine boundaries of the reserve there is a marine protection zone with a width of 3 miles and a 500-meter coastal one.
Interesting facts about the marine reserve of the FEB RAS
The Far Eastern Marine Biosphere Reserve of the FEB RAS is the only reserve in Russia, 98% of the area of which is the water area. It is home to more than 5,000 species of animal plants. Recognition of the merits of the reserve and the importance of animals and plants under its protection, communities, landscapes and natural phenomena was the assignment to it in September 2003 by the UNESCO program "Man and the Biosphere" of international status - biosphere.
On the smallest site - Western (3 thousand hectares of waters: Sivuchchi stones, Minonose and Kreyserok bays) - along with the preservation of natural communities, the biological foundations of the Mariculture are being developed,
On the Southern section of the reserve (15 thousand hectares of water area and 200 hectares of territory): the islands of Furugelm, Vera, Gelmersen kekur, the stones of Bui, Yuzhny, Mikhelson, and Butakova, Cape Ostrovok Faliy, the bays, Kalevala Bay, monitoring and the conservation of the marine communities, and the conservation of the island of the Pesovna River.
Excursions in the Far Eastern Marine Reserve
Various forms of tourism are implemented in the reserve: cognitive, scientific and educational. The Center for Environmental Education of the Far Eastern Marine Reserve has been working in the field of environmental education and educational tourism for more than 30 years. Employees of the reserve conduct a number of unique excursions, which have no analogues in Russia and the world: an excursion “The southernmost island of Russia” to the island of Furugelma; an excursion “Sand Odyssey” to Cape Falshivy; an excursion “Shore of singing pines” from Cape Leo past Baklanich kekers to Srednaya Bay.
